Sometimes is good to be bad…not this time around!
As I have said so many times in the past, yes I am a nerd and comic books are my sanctuary. After a summer of ups and downs, Suicide Squad (SS) had the potential to be the one people would remember. After the flop that was Batman v Superman, DC needed a homerun, but with this all it got was a lost ball out into left field. Apart from a few little chuckles through out, the film feels like mash up of 5 origin stories just thrown together and hoping something would stick.
So lets talk a bit about what SS brought to the table…It brings a cast of that is full of heavy hitters, a budget to back it up, and an insane soundtrack…that’s about it.
From the opening scene to the closing credits Suicide Squad feels flat, full one-liners and just uninteresting. With all that was written about The Joker (Jared Leto) and how he prepared for his role, you will see that it was just overkill since he is probably in about 10% the film. I applaud Leto for trying to bring a different type of Joker to the table, but in the end most of us who are comic book fans feel alienated by the portrayal. The rest of the film is not any better. From beginning to end is a non-stop gun battle, which takes away from really bringing the audience to care for the characters. The film feels like a mash up of 5 or 6 films in one. There is no coherence between story and character development. The only to major back stories told are Deadshot and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and although both did a great job with what they had neither could have carried the film. Every character brings something to the table and perhaps that is what DC is doing, trying to set up spin offs for the future, but this film lacks sincerity in every aspect completely losing its comic book roots and becoming just another wanna be blockbuster.
