Deadpool 2
DEADPOOL 2
Just as getting more and more common, if I want to do a quick review for these types of films there is always a chance of spoilers so this is your warning!
So here is my thoughts, D2 is indeed better, sharper, and more creative film that its predecessor. Freed from the “orgins’ story, this installment has its cake and pours some extra sauce and eats it. Why? Well because it doesn’t take itself seriously. Whether you’re a Deadpool fan or not (I’m not) it still entertains you beyond belief. It takes a number of shots at the superhero subgenre and modern filmmaking in general for that matter; but it still crafts a story that makes sense on its own terms and works as a character piece.
As with the first film, it opens with a series of violent action sequences. This time around is to catch the viewer up on what has happened since the first film. Tim Miller is no slouch in the action department, even if the last film was essentially a single extended freeway scene. This one offers more action, violence, and a variety. For a comic book film rooted in a rule breaking protagonist, Reese and Wernick’s screenplay makes a sense. The piece does take it’s time getting to Cable played by Josh Brolin…(not my favorite choice…too short) and if you hadn’t guessed, X-Force. This film is a little deeper that one might expect and it does throw a little bit of a loop as the idea of Wilson trying to save a mutant kid from Cable and himself makes a this a redemption film alas Logan…even if Deadpool tells you that at the beginning because he has to one up Wolverine, but it works.
The first act is character work, with delightful interplay from Wilson and Colossus(Stefan Kapicic). The forced mentorship from Colossus was the highlight for me, and it’s not neglected or lost among the flashier stuff. If you came to see new stuff, you’ll get your money’s worth on the second act, as Deadpool befriends a troubled mutant (Julian Dennison) who is a threat and a victim of a religious based anti-mutant sect. See I told you it was a little deep.
The second half of the film is where we also meet some new mutants and some of the funniest cameos, my favorite being “Vanisher”. These new mutants who you guessed, it is X Force quickly lead to a serious of creative scenarios a-la Final Destination except for Domino(Zazie Beets) who’s luck keep her alive until the end.
Well I think I will quit while I’m ahead! This film is filled with stuff so keep your eyes peeled. It is by no means perfect, but then again neither is Deadpool but the jerk grows on you. Deadpool too just works! It has his defects like I mentioned. Brolin is fine as Cable and the X-Force material is great. It all works together to make a great action film, comedy, and super hero movie remembering to be a stand-alone feature…oh and please please please stay for the credits. Some wrongs will be righted!!!
