How to Train Your Dragon (2025) – A Triumphant Live-Action Tribute

Fifteen years after the debut of the beloved animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise, the original animated film director Dean DeBlois delivers a stunning live-action adaptation that breathes new life into the classic tale. In an era where live-action remakes of animated films—like Disney’s recent Lilo & Stitch—have become commonplace, this film stands out. If you adored the original, you’ll be enchanted by this faithful rendition. However, if the animated version didn’t capture your heart, this one may not be for you. And not to worry, if you have never seen the original, then this film will make you fall in love with the franchise. DeBlois achieves what many live-action adaptations fail to do: he stays true to the original. Something Sonic the Hedgehog learned after changing his look and completely having to remake the film based on fan outrage. There are no new flashy song-and-dance numbers or jarring plot twists—just the original story, vividly brought to life, complete with that unforgettable, iconic score that will stick with you long after the movie ends.

For those familiar with the 2010 animated film, the plot needs little introduction: a young Viking, Hiccup, befriends a dragon, a creature his people are taught to despise. Core themes—earning a father’s respect, finding alternatives to violence, embracing change and understanding the world beyond your preconceived notions—remain intact, and the story unfolds just as you remember. What sets this adaptation apart from others is its heartfelt tribute to its roots. The cast not only resembles their animated counterparts but channels their essence. Gerard Butler effortlessly reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s formidable Viking chief father. Rather than forcing a cartoon into a realistic setting, the film preserves the whimsical look and feel of the animated world. The island of Berk, the dragons, the costumes, and the supporting characters all mirror their original designs, creating a nostalgic thrill for fans who’ve watched the classic dozens of times.

Mason Thames shines as Hiccup, delivering a performance so authentic it’s hard to believe the original voice of Hiccup, Jay Baruchel, isn’t on screen. Similarly, Nico Parker captures Astrid’s spirit, originally voiced by America Ferrera, with remarkable precision. Every supporting actor appears to have studied the source material, ensuring a seamless transition from animation to live action. While eagle-eyed fans may spot minor differences, the film remains fiercely loyal to its predecessor, reigniting the same joy and excitement it did 15 years ago. In fact, this could be the gold standard for live-action adaptations—call it “How to Train Other Studios on Remakes.”

Poised to be the surprise hit of the summer, this film is a must-see for the whole family, likely warranting multiple viewings on the big screen. With Father’s Day approaching, it’s the perfect outing for dads and their sons or daughters, or for kids to treat their fathers to a story that celebrates the bond between a teen and their dad—and, of course, a dragon.
