Daddio

Daddio is a new film featuring Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson.  It has a feel much like Locke and Collateral.  The film follows only two characters and 95% of the film takes place in the taxi.  The film does a good job of keeping the plot interesting.  Any film that can have only 2 characters and is all dialogue had better be interesting or the audience is going to give up.  Penn and Johnson have a good bit of chemistry.  This isn’t Penn’s finest work, but he plays a very gritty New York cabbie who isn’t afraid to ask any questions. Occasionally the conversation felt a bit forced between Penn and Johnson.  This is a film that is a solid watch one time, but it isn’t something that’s going to have a lot of repetitive watchers. It also wasn’t a film where you felt like you couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

The film does a solid job of holding the audience captive given the idea behind the film.  However, it’s not a film that focuses on anything outside of the dialogue. There isn’t great scenery, music, cinematography or anything else outside of the acting of Penn and Johnson.  Fortunately Penn and Johnson do a solid job, but it’s not quite enough to make this film great.

Overall 6/10.

Hamnet

Chloé Zhao’s new movie Hamnet is a beautiful and deeply moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. It tells the quiet, heartbreaking story of the death of Shakespeare’s young son and how that loss affects his family. This is not a loud tragedy; it is slow and crushing sorrow. It seems...

If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You

“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” a new A24 indie directed by Mary Bronstein, is one of those movies that sticks with you long after the credits roll — emotionally exhausting but ultimately very, very touching, particularly for anyone who has ever had to go through the drudgery of being a parent or...
