Gold

When I first heard that the movie Gold was about a struggling prospector looking for a windfall in Indonesia, I was prepared to be bored to tears.

Instead, I was riveted to to the screen by yet another masterful acting performance by Matthew McConaughey. He is honestly one of our finest actors going today.

McConaughey plays the down on his luck and very unsexy prospector Kenny Wells. In fact, I really think that McConaughey is enjoying playing these non sexy roles lately as sort of a play on his sexiest man alive past.

The plot of the movie does drag a bit on the slow side, but as a viewer, you actually care what happens to Kenny Wells and find yourself rooting for him to find his treasure.

I also happen to like the twists and turns of this movie and found it quite entertaining overall.

Edgar Ramirez and Bryce Dallas Howard do a nice job in their complementary roles, but McConaughey is the one that makes the movie watchable.

A nice 7 out of 10.

Hamnet

Chloé Zhao’s new movie Hamnet is a beautiful and deeply moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. It tells the quiet, heartbreaking story of the death of Shakespeare’s young son and how that loss affects his family. This is not a loud tragedy; it is slow and crushing sorrow. It seems...

If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You

“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” a new A24 indie directed by Mary Bronstein, is one of those movies that sticks with you long after the credits roll — emotionally exhausting but ultimately very, very touching, particularly for anyone who has ever had to go through the drudgery of being a parent or...
