Marlowe

Marlowe

Marlow, a new film starring Liam Neeson, is a throwback to the old detective films of our past.  Don’t let that fool you into thinking this films carries the same charm or charism of those classic detective films.  Neeson’s typical rugged and revengeful characters didn’t play here and he often comes across confused.  The film itself feels confusing at times.  The dialogue was spotty at best.  At one point Neeson’s character responded “That’s only fair” four times within a minute of dialogue.  The film lacked the gripping storyline that made you keep your eyes glued to the screen.  I found myself looking at my watch to see how much time was left.  What I couldn’t really figure out was why make this a throwback type of film?  This could have taken place in the world today and nothing would have felt off.  And with a fair amount of violence and drugs, the era felt off anyway.  Had this film taken place today perhaps the audience wouldn’t end up comparing it to some of the classics.  I certainly wouldn’t tell anyone not to see this film, but I won’t be rushing out to see it again anytime soon.
