Monster Summer
Admittedly I wasn’t sure what to think when I sat down to watch Monster Summer. Would it be another cheesy Mel Gibson film? Gibson hasn’t exactly put out a ton of top notch films over the past several years. And the director of Monster Summer isn’t known for making much of anything yet. So I was pleasantly surprised to watch this film and be entertained throughout . The film has a ton of heart and mystery.
Monster Summer follows a group of kids who live in a town that has some very odd things going on. Noah, played by Mason Thames, has aspirations of becoming a writer. Unfortunately for him, the owner of the local newspaper doesn’t believe much of what Noah writes. The film also stars Mel Gibson. He is a local in the town and someone who all the kids fear. There is great chemistry between Thames and Gibson throughout the film. Gibson reminded me a bit of his character from Signs. He’s fairly even natured while everything around him is a bit of a mess.
The film is a great mixture of mystery and adventure with a dash of horror. The one argument could be that it felt like it was made for a young audience perhaps. There was certainly a bit of a R.L. Stine feel. But since it’s PG-13, it’s really meant for older kids and/or adults.
This is a very easy film to watch. It’s entertaining and it’s also on the shorter side at just over an hour and a half. All told this is not a must watch film, but one that’s easy to watch and certainly not a waste of time.
