Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is one of my favorite movies of the year. In one of the craftiest and entertaining thrillers, Jake Gyllenhaal gives an Oscar worthy performance as the “do anything to get a steady job” Lou Bloom. In fact, we can clearly see Bloom develop from a simple guy looking for work to an evil conniving, manipulative business person who clearly has a high intellect and an understanding of how to get what he wants.

The solid cast in support of Gyllenhaal includes TV Producer Nina (Rene Russo) and assistant Rick(Riz Ahmed). Lou decides that he wants to be a freelance cameraman after witnessing an accident one day and seeing the work that Joe Loder (Bill Paxton) does while filming the scene.

Lou, led by a desire to succeed at all costs; withholds evidence, causes accidents, and manipulates situations, and even kills to get what he wants…all in a creepy and unethical way. Gyllenhaal is so good in this disturbing role that you find yourself rooting for Lou despite all his evil intentions.

Without ruining the movie for anyone, I’ll just say I highly recommend! A wonderful 9 out of 10 Stars and a definite Oscar nomination for Jake Gyllenhaal.

Hamnet

Chloé Zhao’s new movie Hamnet is a beautiful and deeply moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. It tells the quiet, heartbreaking story of the death of Shakespeare’s young son and how that loss affects his family. This is not a loud tragedy; it is slow and crushing sorrow. It seems...
