September 5

September 5 is a thrilling, heart-pounding ride of a film.  This film has all the feelings of a film from the 70’s.  It’s a very gritty film that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The film is only 1 hour and 35 minutes long, but feels like it’s only about 10 minutes as it races around the story.  The plot is the true story from the 1972 Munich Olympics when hostages were taken by terrorists.  Most know how the story ends, but the backstory of how it was all shown on live TV is quite thrilling.

The film doesn’t have any huge stars in it.  The biggest name is Peter Sarsgaard and after that it’s mostly names that average movie fans wouldn’t recognize.  All the actors do a fantastic job of relaying how important this moment was in American and world history.  The 1972 Munich Olympics were the first Olympics to ever be broadcast live around the world.  The crew who was handling this for ABC was a sport television crew who were all of a sudden thrown into a crisis.  They had to figure out, on the fly, how and what to show the audience as an event like this had never been captured on live television.

This is a film that feels small, yet at the same time has a very Oscar buzz to it.  This is the kind of film that can often launch someone’s career towards higher and bigger things.  If you’re into thrilling dramas, this is not a film you should miss.
