The Outrun

The Outrun is a new film starring Saoirse Ronan that follows a woman struggling with alcohol addiction.  While Ronan gives a great performance, this is not an easy film to watch. Ronan’s character Rona grew up in a tough family with a father, played brilliantly by Stephen Dilane, who was bi-polar. Rona has trouble connecting with her father or her mother and turns to alcohol as a coping mechanism.

You see how brutally alcohol can impact someone’s life in the film. Rona fails to be able to maintain any jobs or relationships. She is often seen blaming the people in her life for being too demanding of her. The film has some breathtaking scenery off the coast of Scotland. It’s a film enamored with nature and the countryside and shows off both beautifully.

The film is edited very well with constant cutting back to flashbacks from Rona’s rougher days. Ronan, who as already been nominated for 4 Oscars, may be well on her way to a 5th nomination. And while it’s a great performance, it doesn’t quite have the feel of an Oscar winner.

The film is not a film about visual effects or adventure. And it’s not a film that’s going to make you laugh. It’s a film dedicated to the real lives that many people live. If thats your cup of tea, you’ll appreciate this film as I did. If not, I’d recommend skipping this one and waiting for the next blockbuster.

Chloé Zhao’s new movie Hamnet is a beautiful and deeply moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. It tells the quiet, heartbreaking story of the death of Shakespeare’s young son and how that loss affects his family. This is not a loud tragedy; it is slow and crushing sorrow. It seems...
