Trainwreck
Trainwreck is a raunchy, yet heartwarming comedy written by comedienne Amy Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Girls). One of the great and very rare aspects of this movie is that it caters to both the men and women in the audience. In fact, it’s almost the perfect date movie (well, maybe not the first date.)
Amy (Amy Schumer) plays a very promiscuous writer who struggles with intimacy on quite the large scale. In fact, she regularly sleeps around and then struggles with even having a conversation with the men afterwords. We learn that her behavior is obviously inherited at a young age from her father’s (Colin Quinn) wanton and oversexed life outside of his marriage.
This is a fresh concept as roles like this are usually reserved for men and it’s a fascinating thing to watch the shoe on the other foot. One day, Amy ends up meeting Dr. Aaron Connors (Bill Hader) while writing a story about him and finds herself eventually falling in love (a feeling that is completely foreign to her and which leads to much of the plot of the movie.) Hader (The Skeleton Twins, SNL) is proving that he can definitely play both the comedic as well as serious roles without missing a beat.
The cast overall is very solid, but the biggest surprises are the wonderful performances by the athletes cast in the movie. In particular, Lebron James shines as a cheapskate version of himself and has some of the funniest lines. After this movie, I’m not sure how anyone could not be a fan of LeBron. Another highlight was John Cena of WWE fame who shines as one of Amy’s early boytoys who just happens to have homosexual tendencies.
The movie is pretty long for a comedy (122 minutes) and has a few slow moments that seem to drag on, but for the most part, is very engaging and a fun ride with tons of laughs to be had.
Once again, this is one not for the kiddos, but lots of fun for adults. We’ll give it an 8 out of 10 stars.
