No Escape
I have to admit that when I saw that Owen Wilson and Lake Bell were cast in a thriller/action movie, I really had my doubts.
Well, I am glad to say that I was wrong to doubt! In fact, No Escape is such an intense thriller, your eyes will be glued to the screen for pretty much the duration of the movie.
Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) has just been hired by a U.S. corporation to do some work in an unnamed Asian country and unbeknownst to him, this company has a very bad reputation of taking advantage of the locals. Once Dwyer and his family land and get settled into their hotel, all hell breaks loose in the city as the locals fight with police and pretty much decide to kill all foreigners with a specifically big target on Dwyer.
Lake Bell plays Dwyer’s wife Annie and along with their two little girls (Sterling Jerins and Claire Geare) set out to escape the unruly mob that is out to kill them. A British Ex-Patriot played by Pierce Brosnan aids with their escape (as pretty much the antithesis of James Bond.)
Director John Dowdle (who co-wrote this with his brother Drew) casts these parts perfectly as Wilson plays a great non-action hero/ everyday type man that simply gets stuck in a bad situation. (A role he definitely thrives on.) Bell similarly is wonderfully cast as she shows her true versatility as an actress and flawlessly runs the gamut of almost every emotion during the film.
Is the movie perfect…no. There are a couple things that bugged me like folks speaking in English when we know that would never happen in a fourth world country and some truly ridiculous scenarios to overcome, but all in all, it was a fun night at the movies. Oh and for you guys, this one is great to take a date as she will be holding onto you for dear life throughout! 🙂
